Discovery Green, an 11.78-acre (47,000 m2) urban park in Downtown Houston, Texas is bordered by McKinney Street to its north, La Branch Street to its west, Avenida das Americas to its south, and Lamar Street. It is located adjacent to the George R. Brown Convention Center, and Avenida Texas entertainment district. Discovery Green includes a lake, bandstands, venues for public performances, two dog runs and multiple recreational lawns. A public-private partnership was established in the early 2000s between Houston and several local philanthropic groups, including the Kinder Foundation. The goal of the partnership was to construct a new public greenspace in Downtown. The partnership funded the acquisition of several surface parking lots on Downtown’s east side. In 2002, the City of Houston purchased a part of the land located in front of the George R. Brown Convention Center. The rest of the property was put up for sale by a group led by Maconda Brown of the Brown Foundation and Nancy G. Kinder from the Kinder Foundation. They proposed that the space be made into an urban park. The Mayor was open to the idea[5] and became a strong advocate for a public-private partnership in order to complete the $125 million project.
